Author defends acupuncture in new book

Acupuncture could be voodoo mind over matter or an Eastern treatment that releases endorphins and promotes blood flow to reduce inflammation and strengthen muscles and connective tissue.

The treatment involves inserting tiny needles into one or more of the body's 400 acupuncture points "to release the blocked flow of normal energy."

"Energy flows through these points through pathways, influencing organs and other systems throughout the body," says Kathleen Albertson, an Irvine-based expert in holistic nutrition and exercise (orangecountyacupuncture.com).

"The acupuncture points connect along and open these pathways. These pathways are the 'circuit boards' and 'wiring' that become blocked. The meridians or pathways - also referred to as channels or vessels - connect many systems that interface with the brain, thus affecting brain chemistry."

You say that recent articles reporting acupuncture is nothing but a sham, a mind-over-matter treatment, are not accurate, even though they boast test studies done at various universities.

In my opinion, it does influence a person's feelings. The brain works in ways we cannot comprehend fully in scientific terms.
